Style Cottage

Around and About

Town Clock

Style cottage, Downham Market, is situated in western Norfolk. With small markets held on the town square, near to the town clock, every Friday and Saturday morning, the town provides an array of shops to browse. Downham itself also supports a bus connection to its surrounding towns and villages.

Drive out from Downham in any direction and within a few minutes you are in open country. Try stopping the car and getting out. LISTEN! For the most part all you will hear is silence, perhaps punctuated by the occasional sound of a distant tractor or sheep. Notice the rich, black soil, known for its wonderful crop growing. Sample some celery. Mmm, superb! Locals often sell their wares at the garden gate for a mere portion of the supermarket price.

Situated next to ‘Downham Market High School’ along Bexwell Road, is the town’s leisure centre. This well equipped fitness centre includes facilities such as a fitness suite and swimming pool. For outdoor leisure, separate from the leisure centre, there is a fine golf centre just 2 miles away, with non-members welcome, serving good food all day, everyday. Alternatively, for the more serious golfer, why not bring your own clubs and handicap and call in at Ryston Park Golf Club.

Church Farm

Ten minutes walk away from Style Cottage will bring you to Church Farm, Stow Bardolph, a rare breeds centre which will amuse juniors and seniors alike. With narration from the gamekeeper together with an adventure playground and food and drink served in the café, a visit here is well worth while. With their very own lambing yard, you are able to see the newly born lambs. For more information visit www.churchfarmstowbardolph.co.uk

A minutes walk from here brings you to the fine bar and restaurant of ‘The Hare Arms’, renowned for its award winning steak and peppercorn pie; perfect for lunch or an evening meal. The famous ‘sluice’ amalgamation of 5 rivers is a stones throw away at Denver Marina which displays some of the fine Dutch work of the early 1950’s. Here, riverside, you will also find ‘The Jenyns’, another popular bar and restaurant.

Within a 20 minute drive is the historic port and old town of King’s Lynn with its fine history and guided walks. Why not take the train from our local railway station which takes you through to the centre. In the opposite direction, the rail link takes you direct to London Kings Cross - a 1½ hour journey.

Sandringham House

Sandringham House, the Queen’s Norfolk private residence along with Park House, home initially to the late Princess Diana, sits just 15 miles to our north. Visit www.sandringham-estate.co.uk. Along the A1122 is the market town of Swaffham, home to the programme ‘Kingdom’, starring Steven Fry, who lives nearby. Neighbouring Westacre hosts many concerts and theatres in studios and outdoor Summer Theatres. Also within 50 minutes of us one can find the spectacular North Norfolk coast, or heading in other directions, many fine cities including Norwich, Cambridge and Peterborough, which are also accessible by rail link. For the wildlife enthusiasts, the WWT of Welney Wash is just 6 miles along the A10 which is certainly worth a visit. Check visiting times on this link www.wwt.org.uk to discover and learn about wetland wildlife. Any historian or member of the National Trust must not miss Oxburgh Hall Gardens and Estate and step back in time to uncover the tumultuous past of this Tudor house and its moat. Visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/oxburghhall for details.

RAF Marham

We have the rapidly expanding RAF Station of Marham closeby to us and we experience the enjoyment of tornados flying overhead often in the daytime, being in their flight path. Some 54 years ago Downham had its own airfield by the name of Bexwell Aerodrome with its 3 runways, much of which was dug up on the creation of our by-pass. Photos of the many airmen who served there adorn the walls in the Crown Hotel, with even the initials of some of them carved into a table at one end of the bar. A good pint is served there too.
